In the cup at second division Darmstadt |

Farke meets his ex-captain

It sounds like a doable lot. That’s what ex-coach Adi Hütter (52) thought last season when Borussia was allowed to travel to a second division team in the round of 16…

After the 5-0 gala in the second round against Bayern, Borussia deservedly lost 3-0 at second-division side Hannover. In October we are going to Darmstadt. The good thing about it: Nobody from the team will underestimate a second division team now…

Because of those magic scenes That’s why HE has to go to the World Cup!

It will be a very special game for a player from Darmstadt: Christoph Zimmermann (29) played for eight years in Gladbach’s youth and the U23s. However, he did not make the leap to the professionals, instead moving to Dortmund’s U23s in 2014 – and playing there under coach Daniel Farke (45).

Zimmermann was something like Farke’s star student. When the coach moved to Norwich in England, he took Zimmermann with him straight away – and even made the central defender in England captain in the Premier League for a while.

Without Farke, things were no longer ideal for Zimmermann at Norwich either, the ex-Borussian switched to second division Darmstadt before the season – and will now meet his “promoter” Farke there in October (the game will be played on October 18th or 19th).

By the way: Nine years ago, Borussia was knocked out of the cup in Darmstadt – the third division club at the time suffered their last first-round embarrassment. Also because Branimir Hrgota (29) lobbed his penalty kick over the crossbar in the penalty shoot-out.

For Chris Kramer (31), the game was the first competitive game for Gladbach ever. In addition to him, only Tony Jantschke (31) and Patrick Herrmann (31) from today’s squad were there.

It would be fitting if Gladbach fulfilled their dream of winning the cup this season. In May 2023 it will be exactly 50 years since the foals provided an unforgettable highlight in this competition.

In 1973, coach Hennes Weisweiler’s team won the “pot” against their eternal rival Cologne with a 2-1 victory in Düsseldorf. With the legendary substitution of Günter Netzer (77) and his grandiose winning goal in extra time!
