father wanted to become a doctor

Veteran actor Prem Chopra was born on 23 September 1935 in Lahore, Prem Chopra comes third among 6 siblings. Born in Lahore, Prem Chopra’s family shifted to Shimla, Himachal Pradesh after the split, where he grew up. He did his schooling from Shimla itself. Prem Chopra has graduated from Panjab University. During this time he used to participate in plays. Prem Chopra’s father wanted to make him a doctor, but he came to Mumbai after graduation and soon took entry in Bollywood. Used to go round the studios with portfolio

Prem Chopra stayed in a guest house in Colaba after coming to Mumbai, he started making rounds of film studios with his portfolio. But did not get good response from anywhere. To feed his stomach, he worked as a circulation officer in the Times of India. For 20 days in a month, he looked after the work of circulation in Bengal, Orissa and Bihar. To save his time, he used to call the agent at the station itself, so that he could return immediately after talking to him about work. In this way, he used to do 20 days’ work in 12 days. Villain made famous overnight

Despite working in films, Prem continued to work with The Times of India. In the early 1960s, he felt that acting in films was not a full time job. Due to his passion for acting, he kept working in films. Played the role of Sukhdev in his debut film ‘Shaheed’, one of his rare positive lead roles. During the shooting of ‘Main Shaadi Karne Chala’ someone suggested him to become a villain. After ‘Teesri Manzil’ and ‘Upkar’, he was established as a villain in films. Prem Chopra did a total of 360 films in his 60-year film career. These include Hindi and Punjabi films. He has played both hero and villain characters in films. But his villain character was well-liked and appreciated. He did 19 films with Rajesh Khanna and played the role of villain in all of them.

Prem Chopra himself had told during an interview that ‘people used to hide their wives on seeing me. I used to go to him often and talk to him and he used to be surprised to see that in real life I am also a person like him. People used to think of me as a real dreaded villain, but I used to take it as a complement and think that I am doing my job well.
