- Pakistan’s team could not chase 171 runs in the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka
- Malik vents anger over being dropped from Asia Cup squad
- Pakistan’s middle order emerged as its weakness in Asia Cup
New Delhi: Pakistan suffered a 23-run defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka in the final of the Asia Cup 2022 on Sunday. Veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik, who is out of the Pakistan team, on Sunday vented his anger over not being selected in the squad for the Asia Cup in a sarcastic tweet. Malik, who played a major role for Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2021, played his last match for the national team in November 2021.
40-year-old Malik showed good form in the National T20 Cup and scored a half-century for Central Punjab. Despite this, Malik did not find a place in the squad for the Asia Cup. Many questions were also raised as to why Malik was not selected in the team despite his consistent performance in the middle order. Pakistan’s team could not chase down the target of 171 runs in the final and were all out after scoring 147 runs in 20 overs.
Barring Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed, none of the batsmen could impress. Pakistan’s weakness emerged as its middle order. In the final against Sri Lanka, Pakistan lost six wickets in a span of only 37 runs. In such a situation, Malik tweeted, ‘When we will overcome the friendship, favorite and dislike tradition. May Allah always help the honest.’ To this, former Pakistan wicket-keeper batsman Kamran Akmal replied, ‘Ustadji, don’t be so honest.’
Many reactions were seen on Shoaib Malik’s Twitter post. Many believe that Pakistan’s middle order lacked experience and the team was largely dependent on Rizwan and Babar Azam. Unfortunately for Babar Azam, the Asia Cup tournament was very disappointing, where he could score only 68 runs in 6 matches.
It should be noted that Babar Azam had completely ruled out the possibility of Shoaib Malik’s return. He had said that Iftikhar Ahmed, Khushdil Shah and Asif Ali will be supported till the T20 World Cup. Babar Azam had said, ‘When senior players leave the team, those who replace them need attention. Hafeez and Malik were big players and we will miss them a lot. Players like Asif Ali, Khushdil Shah and Iftikhar Ahmed will have to fill their place. Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad is expected to be announced this week.
